I first met Manny while attending East Stroudsburg State College. I was new to ESSC from Carbondale, Pa. and the college environment was a bit overwhelming to me. I remember the seemingly large scale nature of everything including the athletic fields. It was there I saw Manny and others playing soccer. I had never seen soccer before and was intrigued by the stamina of the soccer players. Later I had the chance through friends in Shawnee Hall to meet Manny and others from the Phi Sig House who were also soccer players. Manny was so likable that anyone was immediately drawn to him. He was a bit older than all the peers and was thus seen as a leader and quite sociable. Little did I know what friendship we would strike. Later in my senior year I had the opportunity to move to a rental house with Manny and others and we had great friendship, the kind where you can call anyone at any time and get help! Manny was a very kind individual who would "give you the shirt off his back" and everyone loved him. Later Pat Cawley, Manny and I had the chance to live in various wonderful places for the next three or four years or so! Actually, when I left Pennsylvania for Montana it was from the place Manny, Pat and I lived in Wind Gap. Manny taught in N.J., Pat in N.J. and I at East Stroudsburg. We loved the poconos and we had great times and became know as the "three musketeers". We were always together and helped each other out in many ways! Those were great days! Manny met Carol via the teacher education program (I wonder who introduced them?) and, of course, they hit it off right from the start. What a wonderful family! One of my favorite stories of Manny is related to his pride of his native country (Italy) and his pride of his family heritage. Pat and Manny were big on cars and one of Manny's first vehicles was a Ford Gran Torino. Manny was proud of getting this new car as a passage of such toward his new career and success. Of course he had to take the car home to NYC and show his dad. He took his dad for a ride around the block and his father, speaking in Italian, said "Emanuel, my son, bona bona, you get this wonderful new car and you had the initials for your papa --GT inscribed in the glove compartment...how nice!" Manny did not have the heart to tell him it was for Grand Torino and let his papa think it was in fact in his honor! I will miss Manny and all of our wonderful memories will help me remember him as a great individual!
